Career Details
I was an NHS Consultant in general adult psychiatry with a special interest in rehabilitation in Livingston in Scotland for 5 years up until Nov 2002. I had clinical responsibility for a six bedded in-patient rehabilitation unit.


I worked for a year as an NHS general adult psychiatrist in South Oxfordshire. I then worked for a time as a locum. I did locums in occupational Psychiatry for the RAF, and I worked for a year as a locum consultant psychiatrist in a prison, HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes . In 2004 I moved into the private sector.

(1) Because of my particular combination of experience of Alcohol and Drug problems, general psychiatry and rehabilitation I am well placed to provide expert opinions in this area.

I have extensive experience of preparing court reports. I have recently appeared before Family courts.

Legal Courses attended

(1) Acting as an Expert Witness in Civil Disputes – an introduction, Sweet & Maxwell, November 2004.

(2) Report writing(Core Skills) and Report Writing (advanced skills). Two One day courses run by Professinal Solutions, December 2005.

(3) I am certified as an Expert Witness by the Cardiff University La School Bond Solon Expert Witness Scheme(2009). This one year course requires five days attendence and completion of a videoed cross examination, preparation of a sample report and completion of a multiple choice examination




Legal Experience

I have extensive experience of preparing court reports and appearing before courts at various levels, Sheriff Courts (When working in Scotland), Coroners, and Mental Health review tribunals. I have also worked extensively over the years on various legal cases, including personal injury cases, occupational cases, as well as more conventional mental health work.

I am Section 12 approved under the mental health act.

Distinctions

Laughlin Prize for First Place in the examination for Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, (UK and Ireland) May 1992. This is the examination used to enable doctors from the UK, Republic of Ireland, and various other countries to enter the Psychiatric profession. The examination is held annually. 500 doctors take part. The examination has various components, including multiple-choice questions, an essay, and a clinical interview with a psychiatric patient.



Teaching Experience

I have extensive experience of lecturing and tutoring medical students, occupational therapists,
General practitioners e.t.c.

I am an examiner for the M.R.C.Psych examinations (Part One).





Publications

(1) Sole author, ‘‘Options for the Treatment of Negative Symptoms in Schizophrenia, published January 1994 by C.N.S drugs, Adis publications, New Zealand.

(2) I was co-author, with Professor Eve Johnstone, Professor of Psychiatry at Edinburgh University, of a book chapter on Unusual Psychiatric Syndromes in the book ‘’Troublesome disguises’’ edited by Dr Dinesh Bhugra.

(3) I was involved in a multi-centre M.R.C study assessing the value of medication related information in compliance in schizophrenia. The study entailed the recruitment of patients from ten different centres throughout the Lothian’s, Lanarkshire, Forth valley and Strathclyde. I was a grant holder for this project which produced 3 journal articles.#

(7) I have been involved as co-author in various other articles which have been published in psychiatric journals.
